What Families Need to Know
NASP stands for National Archery in the Schools Program. It is in 49 states and 11 countries. NASP in Iowa is coordinated by the IA Department of Natural Resources. It’s a different kind of team sport because it’s open to any student. The mission is to bring archery to everyone through the PE program and one goal is to improve educational performance. The S in NASP stands for school, which means the school must teach it in PE first and club is the continuation of the NASP program. Our team is open to any Spencer Schools student in grades 6-12 and Sacred Heart grades 4-6.
Spencer Archery Team was formed by a group of parents in 2009, though it started in the PE program in 2006. Our team has qualified for state every year and finished in the top 4 in most of them. Last year 100 archers participated in our program.
Students aren’t required to have the archery unit in PE to join. If they haven’t, then they must attend one session of New Archer training. One goal of our program is to keep the cost to families very low. A team shirt is required for competition. Families can also order fan apparel and follow Facebook or website for link. For equipment, we work on a “pay it forward” system, each year raising money for the next. Archers are required to sell 10 tickets for $10 each (or purchase yourselves). So, you decide what you pay for the program. The only up front cost is the team shirt. If this is a problem, please let me know.
Another way we offset our equipment cost is through a target sponsorship program. A $250 donation covers the cost of one target, rebuilding and new cover. We will provide a sign with your logo above the target and list your business on our website, as a thank you for your donation.
Spencer Archery will provide archers with a dedicated bow for their use throughout the season. We also provide arrows, targets, and tournament fees. We will maintain club equipment, but not private bows. If you want to use your own equipment, No Limits and Southern Archery know our program and carry what the NASP program uses (Original Matthews Genesis bow and Easton 1820 aluminum arrows).
Practices this year will be held at Grace United Church basement. Practices are held five days a week. Please check the current team calendar, Facebook and the Band app for practice times. We do follow the weather policies of Spencer Schools, so if it’s an early out, late start or cancellation, practice follows the same plan. Archers are required to wear closed toe shoes when shooting (practice and tournaments). This is a safety requirement of the NASP program. Competitions will be held on Saturdays and are within 1-2 hours of Spencer. The state tournament is in Des Moines. Please check the current team calendar for competition and state tournament dates.
Everyone can practice, and archers will be rotated in for tournaments. The goal is for everyone to compete in one away tournament and everyone shoots in our home tournament. Teams consist of 24 archers, with 12 scores (4 of opposite gender) being used for the team score. There are individual awards as well. Students are chosen for rosters based on attitude, effort, attendance, academic eligibility, behavior and score. Because we have more archers than spots for a competition, we require 24 hours’ notice of cancellation, except in cases of illness or family emergency. If you do not show or cancel right before, that means someone who could have shot, sits out and we lose the registration fee. Consequently, you will sit out the next TWO tournaments. It is your responsibility to check the rosters. Not knowing you are in a competition is not an excuse. Finally, archers CANNOT DRIVE THEMSELVES TO OUT OF TOWN TOURNAMENTS. On the flip side, since we are a school club, you can drive to practice on a school permit.
We host two of our own tournaments each season, and we need the help of ALL families. At our home tournament, teams from the surrounding area will come to Spencer Middle School to compete against us. For an end of the year celebration, we hold a FUNdraiser tournament. Please check the current team calendar for both tournament dates. All archers can shoot, there will also be a community and parent shoot, raffle drawing, silent auction and grilled burgers for lunch. There is no admission fee, and all archers are encouraged to participate.
We have a 3D program for more experienced archers. Shooters need to be able to adjust their aim point each round and be consistent in their shooting. Arrows are scored from 7-10 instead of 1-10, so a miss is a large drop in score. Archery should build self-esteem, so we want you to be able to shoot “red or better” to participate in 3D. 3D is secondary, the basics are taught in bullseye, and you must compete in bullseye also. 3D teams are made up of 12-24 archers, the top 6 scores count and 2 must be of the opposite gender.
Before you come to a coach with questions, please check the website, Facebook page and Band app. Please do not call/text/email questions that you can answer for yourself. We are volunteers with full-time jobs and will answer daytime questions as breaks allow.
